Date : Sat. 7th of April 2007
Time : 14h
Entrance : free
Location : la Maison de l'Architecture, Poitiers

14.00 - 14.30 --- DesireData --- Chun Lee (TW/GB)
14.45 - 15.15 --- Pulsecode --- Fokke de Jong (NL)
15.30 - 16.00 --- Circuit Bending --- Audun Eriksen (NO)
16.30 - 17.00 --- LADSPA2 --- Steve Harris (GB)
17.15 - 17.45 --- Mirra --- Enrike Hurtado (ES)
18.00 - 18.30 --- Moolab --- Eva Sjuve (SE/NO)

Today is all about Free Libre Open Source tools for artistic creation. makeart has invited 6 artists/coders to present the software they've been developing and the projects they've been working on. Find out about the ins and outs of circuit bending, mobile media, tools to code sound and more.

All the lectures will be translated from French to English and vice-versa simultaneously by professional interpreters from babels.org thanks to the support of la Maison des Langues de l'Université de Poitiers and to the ALIS open source platform. A basic radio receiver will allow you to listen to each lecture in your preferred language. We expect to have some receivers, but please bring your own to make sure not to miss out on the translation.

DesireData --- Chun Lee (TW/GB)

DesireData DesireData is a project whose main goal is to enhance the everyday experience of the PureData users and developers. DesireData is a continuation of ImpureData originally developed by Mathieu Bouchard between February and May 2004. DesireData aims to provide several internal (ie. client and server architecture) and external (ie. new user interface front end) enhancements.
Chun Lee performs live at the Confort Moderne Sunday the 8th (Cracktux) >>>. http://desiredata.goto10.org

Pulsecode --- Fokke de Jong (NL)

PulseCode PulseCode was designed by Fokke de Jong (NL). It is an experimental programming language for audiosynthesis and audioprocessing. Basically, it is a modular synthesizer, with which you create 'patches' by writing code. It has a very straightforward syntax and is easy to learn. There are roughly forty or so (increasing all the time) builtin modules. These include various kinds of delays, oscillators, filters and noisegenerators. You can easily build more complex modules with these, and then reuse them in your code.
Fokke de Jong will perform live at the Confort Moderne Sunday the 8th (bl0bj0b) >>>.

Circuit Bending --- Audun Eriksen (NO)

Circuit-bending Audun Eriksen has worked with experimental musical instrument since 1994, designing instruments for the Norwegian performance group "the Four". This includes both acoustical and electronic instruments, often played with unusual and/or theatrical movements. Many instruments have been constructed from recycled materials including circuitbent electronic toys.
Circuit-bending is an electronic art which implements creative audio short-circuiting. This renegade path of electrons represents a catalytic force capable of exploding new experimental musical forms forward at a velocity previously unknown. Anyone at all can do it; no prior knowledge of electronics is needed. The technique is, without a doubt, the easiest electronic audio design process in existence.
Audun Eriksen will introduce the audience to the principles of bending electronic toys and demo some of his own instruments.
Audun Eriksen will perform live at Carré Bleu Friday the 6th >>>.

LV2 (LADSPA successor) --- Steve Harris (GB)

LV2 LV2 is the successor to the LADSPA plugin specification, which has been the dominant Linux audio plugin format since its creation in 2000. LV2 fixes the issues that were found with LADSPA, and adds a novel extension mechanism to further encourage enhancements and experimentation. This talk will briefly describe the features and design ethos of LV2 and present examples of it in use.

Mirra --- Enrike Hurtado (ES)

Mirra Mirra is a free software tool that can be used to create non conventional software interfaces. Mirra is a 2D OpenGL graphics Python library. Mirra allows for the creation of 2D interfaces, games, applications. Mirra is focused on interaction in a way like Adobe Director or Flash do . It defines a set of "mouse aware" classes to render primitive shapes (Text, Pixel, Line, Circle, Rect, Bitmap, BitmapPolygon) that can be easily extended by the user. The code structure hides the complexity to allow focusing on the user's problems. Because Mirra is pure Python, plus some widely used Python libraries, it can be used with any text editor or platform and it can be easily extended and modified. Mirra has been developed by ixi to develop ixi music applications but also to teach students programming by manipulating graphics.
Mirra is supported by the Digital Research Unit of Huddersfield

Moolab --- Eva Sjuve (NO/SE)

moolab Eva Sjuve, is exploring the intersection of sound, performance and mobile media. She is building physical interfaces to enhance live digital music, and is also implementing musical compositions for mobile devices.
moolab, initiated by Eva Sjuve in 2003, is a research platform for the creative use of technology, DIY, open source, mobile interfaces for sound and visual expression. The talk will include a description of the projects "Go Karamazov", and "Mobile Noise Apparatus" and other moolab projects, past and upcoming.
Eva Sjuve will perform live at Carré Bleu Friday the 6th >>>.
