"Releasing your artworks using free license : howto" - Benjamin Jean (FR)

coproduction with Confort Moderne

The lecture will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of free content licenses for musicians and artists. It will be followed by questions and answers with the audience. The lecture will be given in French.

Licensing your work has a big impact on how it will be distributed, it is therefore very important to choose a license that suits your work and your goals best.
But how do you find your way through this jungle called copyright law, without hiring a lawyer? This lecture will give insight into the different licenses out there for artists and musicians, it will explain to them in relation to the French situation, with particular attention for the impact SACEM* has on the freedom of artists and musicians. Next to the more theoretical aspects of free content versus copyright, the lecture will also cover the practical aspects of licensing. How do you apply a license to your work? What happens if you don't license your work? How can you earn money with your work, if it has a free content license? Find out how you can use copyright law in a creative way, to gain the freedom to share, copy, sample, modify, distribute and give away without breaking any laws.

*SACEM = French professional association collecting payments of artists’ rights and distributing the rights to the original authors, composers and publishers.
