Naked on Pluto

2010-08-31

‘Naked on Pluto’ is a Massively Multiplayer Text Based Sandbox Adventure Game on Facebook, about social networks within an AI driven avant-futuristic post-convenient social network infrastructure of “some sort”…

The project is developed during the ‘funware’ shared residency at NIMk, BALTAN Laboraties and Piksel, between June and November 2010, by Dave Griffiths, Marloes de Valk and myself. We just started a sprint this week to finalize a vertical slice representing the whole experience of one player from the beginning until the end, including the necessary game mechanics and features required to make it possible. The sprint at NIMK is also an occasion to freeze some background history elements and what are the different issues related to social networks that we want to cover in this game.

All we can say now is that you will start the game naked with a “mandatory fanny pack” (woohoo!). If you want to know more you can find some clues in the blog, including some links to our braindump wiki that contains tons of spoilers. You can also start checking the code and figure out a couple of things. Everything is copyleft and published as we write it (naked obviously…).

We will announce some game-play test sessions in the coming weeks, on the blog and on the fan page of the project. So feel free to subscribe to the Facebook page in order to stay in touch with the project development.

In parallel to the game, we try to document our experiments with the facebook API, our readings and the different inspirations for this project. Finally, we aim at posting a series of interviews that explore different views and opinions on social networks, centralized versus distributed architectures and online privacy. Stay tuned for more…
