Candy Claws

The sea, the plants and animals around us, and life in past times are all the favorite themes of Candy Claws. This electronic/pop ensemble is inspired by nature books, landscapes and also punctuate their tracks with field recording. The video for their track ‘The Breathing Fire’ reminded me a little of a movie called ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’: a mysterious atmosphere, the communion with nature and lost innocence. The way sounds, murmurs and rustles are put together reinforce the timeless nature of their work.
Last but not least, you might also want to check their ‘Candy Claws in dreamland’ video series.

Interview answered by Kay Bertholf and Ryan Hover.

Which ice cream flavor(s) do you like the most?

Kay: Noodle Flavor.
Ryan: New Flavor.

What is your last or upcoming project about?

Kay: It’s about the Mesozoic Era.
Ryan: When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth!

How do you make music? Any specific workflow or methods?

Kay: I usually sit down with a guitar, without thinking that I’m writing something, and when I play something cool I try to remember it and give it to Ryan.
Ryan: Kay’s guitar melodies are a great starting point for writing a song, to put chords around them and make an actual arrangement. We record in bits and pieces and put it all together on the computer.

How do you make a living?

Kay: I’m in college right now, but sometimes my friends and I play drums downtown for some extra $$$$$.
Ryan: I do freelance graphic design.

How do you feel about people sharing your music?

Kay: It’s great!
Ryan: I think it’s a compliment when someone likes your music enough to share it with someone else. What matters to us is that we can add some beauty to the world. Money will sort itself out.

Who was your musical hero[in]s when you were a kid?

Kay: Eileen Ivers, a celtic solo artist with a blue violin. And Five Iron Frenzy.
Ryan: Jason Martin from Starflyer 59. And his brother Ronnie, aka Joy Electric.

Kay: Ska.
Ryan: Death Metal.

Which artists are you following at the moment?
