"Fork a house!" Open Source Architecture

Imagine a shared territory where you can build your own house, make it open to others, take an existing design and adapt it, or collaboratively design a project. Using Free Software and copyleft, everyone can use, modify, and redistribute architectural designs and do so using tools adaptable to your own needs.

Within the workshop you'll learn how to use Blender and build your own house, based on a common "source house", like forking a piece of software. We'll start with a simple door, every participant will open that door, and imagine what lies behind. This will lead to various hypotheses, functions and spaces, all forks of the same base idea. Step by step we'll gather these projects and see how they can be merged back together to create a shared space.

Day 1 ~ Architectural modelling

  • Learning the basics of 3D modelling
    • Geometry, vectors and 3D spaces
    • Inner concepts of Blender software
    • Dots, lines, faces, modifiers: the modelling tools
    • Techniques and modelling strategies
  • Making a first draft of the house - forking

Day 2 ~ Animation and events

  • Introduction to animation concepts
    • Keyframes, animation curves
    • Bones and skeletons
    • Non-linear Animation
  • Adding automations and integrating engines to the housing
  • First attempt to merge the projects, unstable versions - merging

Day 3 ~ Pictures and rendering

  • Teaching rendering techniques
    • Cameras
    • Lights
    • Materials and textures
    • Rendering options
  • Making a minimal movie
  • Development of the projects in stable releases – merging or branching

Day 4 ~ Interactivity

  • Approach of the possibilities of Blender game engine
    • Discovering the Game Engine interface
    • Experimenting the Bullet physical engine
    • Learning to read a Python script
  • Finalization of the project
  • Virtually meet and live in the house: networking

Milovann Yanatchkov (born 1973) lives and works in Paris. As an architect and multi-media artist, he explores the issue of creative and digital processes in the fields of architecture, painting and computer. As an independent architect he participates in project design for architecture and urban planning bureaus: project of urban prospective at La Défense (INterland / Architecture Biennale in Venice 2008), Velodrome for Madrid 2016 Olympics application (Plan01/winner project), 40 nursery cots in Paris (BP architecture/in progress). He also makes 3D images, animation movies and virtual tours for the representation and assistance in projects design. Self-taught programmer, he works exclusively with Free Software and is interested in computer languages as a medium of creation (parametric modelling and live-coding).
